IMPORTANT NOTE: Watch the Game Play Trailer

Ubisoft has released a new trailer from World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, showcasing the latest RTS developed by Massive Entertainment and scheduled for March 2009. World in Conflict: Soviet Assault will offer six new single player missions and eight new multiplayer maps all played from the perspective of the Soviet side of the conflict. The game will allow you to call the reinforcements or new units to the battlefield by using the context menu or voice communication via the headset, same as in Tom Clancy's EndWar.

Take command
Rewind to the end of the eighties. Instead of collapsing, a desperate Soviet Union advances into Europe and launches an attack on the continental United States.

Choose a side, commander. Take control of the most powerful and technologically advanced military hardware at your disposal, reinforce it with an Intel® Core™ i7 in your PC and accept your mission: end this war, one way or another.

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault* brings us more of the groundbreaking game play that made WiC E3 2007’s ‘Best Strategy Game’. By merging elements of strategy, first-person-shooter and action games, Massive has created what it calls the ‘action-strategy’ genre. They have certainly succeeded in winning over fans of all the component genres.

You can get hold of the Soviet Assault add-on in one of two formats: either a stand-alone add-on or with the original game, as part of the World in Conflict: Complete Edition. Both will be available in shops and on Steam. (Note: if you bought the retail version of WiC, you’ll need the retail version of Soviet Assault. Similarly, if you bought WiC on Steam, you should get the Steam version of the expansion.)

In Soviet Assault’s single player campaign, you can play as the Soviet army and follow the global invasion from the perspective of the motherland. Expect more Hollywood-quality voice-over performances, tense and emotional storylines and cinematic storytelling.

Of course, you’ll find more maps: six in the single player campaign and two new in multi-player (Berlin and Norway).

The game play you’ve come to expect is the same. Command units from Infantry, Armour, Support, or Air roles and engage in intense combat, focusing on tactical decisions.

For cutting-edge graphics, the latest version of Massive’s proprietary Masstech engine features advanced lighting and physics, the latest DX10 technology, and full 360-degree camera control. And your surroundings don’t just look good. Houses crumble, forests burn, terrain becomes deformed and the entire environment changes.

All this will satisfy existing WiC fans and swell their ranks with new recruits. And it’s a game designed to give a good processor a workout. So make sure you’ve got one in your inventory.

New Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor is a stand-alone sequel for the award winning real-time strategy game, Company of Heroes.
Campaigns - Tales of Valor contains three campaigns based on historical events from World War II. There are a great many stories to be told from the war, and these campaigns each tell a unique and intimate tale that is translated into gripping tactical combat.
Tiger Ace is the first of the three campaigns, telling the story of The Battle of Villers Bocage over the course of three scenarios. The battle takes place in France, 1944, as Allied forces stream ashore from the beaches. A British armored column threatens to break through a gap in the German lines, but a fearsome Tiger Tank commanded by a veteran crew races forward to engage them in the town the battle was named after, Villers Bocage. Take Direct Control of your lone Tiger, invest command points in your tank crew to unlock new abilities, fight to keep your crew alive and your unit from being out flanked! We will be posting more information about the campaign, the history behind it, direct-fire and more here on the community site in the coming weeks.

Multiplayer - Three new multiplayer modes called Operations have been created for Tales of Valor. Operations are multiplayer scenarios that offer players new ways to battle against or with each other. Tales of Valor also includes a batch of new maps for multiplayer or skirmish games.

Men of War takes place in Europe and North Africa during the height of World War II. The story takes place over three different campaigns and players take on the role of Soviet, Allied and German soldiers. Each campaign has its own scenario and structured timeline, which brings different elements of the war to life.

The game features hundreds of accurately modelled historical tanks and vehicles — including new designs of tanks, APCs and heavy guns — all of which are ready for your command. Dynamic in-game cutscenes enhance the single-player by telling the plot, without pulling the player out of the game experience. What's more, the sounds of war have been given a new lease of life, with more than 1,000 sounds effects of weapons and combat gear; all recorded under real operating conditions.

The single-player campaign also features a customisable user-interface, so players can have the command controls laid out in their own style. One of the biggest changes for Men of War is the inclusion of a comprehensive multiplayer, featuring new maps and modes, including Capture the Flag, High-Value Cargo and more. Also, there's a refined rating system to ensure a fair fight in online multiplayer battles.

I'm thinking RUSE looks pretty good except for a couple of things... The tanks seem out of scale at certain distances and the big red arrow on the battlefield is overdone. As I understand you only get a certain amount of RUSE 'tickets' to use... these allow you to see what direction your enemy is moving which is kind of like having intelligence or recon capacity. Still the battlefields look good and expansive. Might be worth a try.

Eventually I think their will be a merging of these types of strategy games with FPS games, so people will get the best of both worlds, considering the graphics on the current strategy games it appears they are getting closer to this merging concept. Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.
