Have a great Memorial Day Weekend.

Invite some friends over for a bbq, take the family to the park, go fishing... whatever, just get outside!

and, pay tribute to our veterans.

Check out these great photos of New York City during FleetWeek. Click on Photos.

That's part of what I'm up to, along with fireworks, play time in the park, hiking (the urban kind, and yes there are 'wild' animals here too ;D)... and enjoying some good food.

Best to all, have a good one!

My daughter and I made it to the Amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) on Memorial Day... good 1 1/2 hour line but it was worth it. There were 2 hover crafts on board that are able to exit out of the back of this vessel, an M1A1 Abrams Tank, and other vehicles, attack helicopters, cobras and the other aircraft. Very impressive and totally awesome.

Some of what amazes me is that this 'small' basically aircraft carrier it appears larger than the Intrepid (WWII class carrier) that is docked at the 50th Street Pier, and this 'small' carrier is basically as large as the high rises you see in the background. wow. It had two main hangers, one at sea level, both massive, it's top deck must be close to 100' off the water, there were blast doors on the side that I assume would open up if there was an internal explosion, and it goes on. Really a great sight to see.
Taken from link above so you can see a bit:
NEW YORK (May 21, 2008) - Amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) steams up the Hudson River during the parade of ships for the 21st Fleet Week New York. More than 4,000 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen will participate in various community relations projects and see the sights in New York City .
