FREE FORUM SITE:

http://www.freeforums.org/img/top_logo.gif

What I notice about a lot of clans is that they don't have a forum. In my experience, a forum is the most important thing about a clan. Accross a variety of Games, I am in numerous clans and the thing I enjoy most is exchanging thoughts over our forums. So how can you make one, fairly easily?

Go to Free Forums (http://www.freeforums.org/), click sign up and fill out the whole thing. Voila, done, finished!

The rest is a matter of organising the forums. If anyone has any questions regarding this, I am more than happy to help out.

At HackHunters, we use SMF which is also free. It is also good for many reasons including as they say elegant, effective and powerful, but also it is safe as many hackers don't bother attacking it.

http://www.simplemachines.org/

Simple Machines Forum — SMF in short — is a free, professional grade software package that allows you to set up your own online community within minutes.
Its powerful custom made template engine puts you in full control of the lay-out of your message board and with our unique SSI - or Server Side Includes - function you can let your forum and your website interact with each other.
SMF is written in the popular language PHP and uses a MySQL database. It is designed to provide you with all the features you need from a bulletin board while having an absolute minimal impact on the resources of the server. SMF is the next generation of forum software - and best of all it is and will always remain completely free!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HAVING VIDEOS ON SMF FORUM:

Simple Machines VIDEO Forum Instructions:

1) Go to: Download the Mod on this page: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=977 and find the file that is ZIPPED. When downloaded, keep the file zipped on your desktop.

If you have problems downloading and keeping the file zipped (i.e., it unzips automatically), see if this is the issue: Safari (Mac): Right Click on AEVAC_v3.1.2.zip file and select 'Download Linked File'... Remember you need the original zipped file which is a folder filled with several files.

2) Go to your SMF Admin Page > Packages > Download Packages > Upload a Package and click on Choose File. Select the zipped file from your desktop. Click Upload.

3) Go to Browse Packages and at the bottom you'll see your Mod Package, click on Apply Mod.

4) A new page will come up. Scroll down to very bottom and click on Install Now.

That is the installation instructions that should work for everyone.

When you post a video, say from YouTube.com, all you have to do is copy/paste the url to the video's page, like this:

http://***.youtube.com/watch?v=iIEClu-OA8Q (replace the *** with www) and this is what it looks like:

You can post a message for others to see even if they are not online at the moment. InvisionFree can be used for friends, clubs, and businesses. InvisionFree could be used to talk about your favorite sport or even a general chat area where people can talk about whatever they want. Not only does InvisionFree provide the best possible environment for online communities, but it is also easy to set up and manage.

Thinking about starting a clan? But you're afraid of a big financial investment?

Do a google search for Free Forum Hosting... there you'll get a lot of choices, like:

http://www.freeforums.org/
http://www.makeforum.org/home.php
http://www.eamped.com/ ,
http://www.lefora.com/ ,
http://www.forumer.com/

and others you can find with a google search... where I think they give you everything for free: domain name, hosting and even help in designing through simple interface. I don't personally know anything about these services so you'll have to review them yourself.

Check these sites to see what kind, if any, advertising they'll do on your site.

Try that to get started... as you get members you can always upgrade to your own domain name and customizable forum.

Another very easy way is to use XFire to set up your clan but finding a free forum site is probably the best solution. XFire is good for recruiting so don't discount it.

My favourite has always been Forumotion.

http://www.forumotion.com

It's very customizable as far as usage and layouts go, not to mention user-friendly and admin-friendly, in my opinion. :]

Considering all the choices above, I think it would be great if we could provide links to Gaming sites that really look great using the above. Nothing better than seeing a forum in action.

If you know of any please post. Thanks.

we launched an experimental site on http://ProBoards.com to do a little testing to see what kind of useful info we can give people who are attempting to launch a clan website quickly.

What I found is the info they provide is really for advanced users, or really basic info on how to make a post, but nothing regarding the basics of designing a Proboard website using the tools given, and how to do basic tweaks on those tools to get something that looks reasonable.

Here's the link:
http://hackhunters.proboards.com

join and help me figure out some of the basic coding and put that into a tutorial for others to use.

There are loads but what I would say is when you want a forum try a few out fist as some are better than others which I have found out to my cost the forum I use is by Forumer its PHPBB2 (old) but now I know what im doing I cant move it as they don't allow you to back up your forum >:(

So learn from my mistake & try before you commit & don't worry about names you can get a Domain name & just use that when you find the right one.

Yes, back up's are very important factor. You could lose a lot of good forum post, information, and more.

Thats a real bummer jim. Well as long as we all learn by our mistakes. We should be good from now on.

A new Free Forum site, check it out.

Forum-Free.net (beta)

http://forum-free.net

We've just set one up for HackHunters to see how it works, registration seems pretty easy. I think this one might be out of Hong Kong or perhaps China, but it's hard to say where the server(s) is located. We'll post any pros/cons we discover but this certainly, initially seems like a good option.

Our Demo Site: http://hackhunters.forum-free.net (currently waiting for registration confirmation which isn't instant)
